The L.A. Riots
A result of the verdict of the Rodney King Case
In 1991, an incident called the Rodney King beating occurred. This
involved the forced submission of a drunk black man by four white
police officers (picture seen below).
This event was captured on film, and soon this
tape hit the media. The case captured the eye of the nation, and as
Mr. King pressed charges against the police for what he viewed as
"unnecessary aggression",
racial tension elevated. The put the personal
safety of individuals within the Los Angeles area at risk, as the
threat of violence was present. The floodgate burst as the verdict
was released. Many streamed into the streets, and riots broke out,
killing several and wounding many others. These riots as a result
of racial tension put many at risk; not only for those involved in the
riot, but also their opposers, the police. A third party was also
at risk, in the bystanders or passerbys of the disruptions. Not only
were these three major parties at risk, but the mayor risked political
standing (his public image) when he commented on the riots, when he
stated that he felt the verdict of the jury was unjust.
For the nation, racial tension mounts everywhere, as the media conveyed
images of Rodney king being beaten and issues of racism are discussed.
Face of the police nationwide and authority in general is at risk, based
upon the occurrances of that evening, and how the riots were to be
handled. Moral values are being questioned, as definitions of the
boundaries of the law are being drawn.
